Hilson and West performed the song on on The Late Show with David Letterman. The radio & video edit features Hilson performing additional ornamentation over Kanye's verses and replaces some of Ne-Yo's, omits her own last verse before the final chorus, and the outro of the album version. It was confirmed on Hilson's official video blog album countdown. Hilson said that she had always wanted to work with Ne-Yo and Kanye West, and West's vocals were a last minute addition to the single. Like most of the songs on the album, Hilson made final amendments to the song before it was recorded. It was written by Danja (Nathaniel Hills), Marcella Araica, Kevin "KC" Cossom, Ne-Yo (Shaffer Smith), Keri Hilson and Kanye West. Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling over one million downloads domestically. "Knock You Down" also reached the top ten of the charts in Canada, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom and peaked at number three on the U.S. The song was released as the album's third single in the United States on March 24, 2009, and became Hilson's most successful single to date, reaching number-one in New Zealand where it was certified platinum by the RIANZ. A critical success, it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 52nd Grammy Awards. It’s amazingly relentless in its naked borrowing from other, better horror and sci-fi movies that I was able to keep occupied making a checklist of the movies referenced. But I have to be honest-speaking of venality, I found something almost admirable about the film’s cheek. So yes, should one choose to take offense, one certainly may. The other is faux-archeologist/genuine anti-evil secret agent Jenny ( Annabelle Wallis) who’s mainly around to be rescued by Nick, and whose surface venality suggests that his business card describes him as a “lovable rogue.” (She is played by Sofia Boutella, whose filmography testifies that she’s accustomed to being ill-used in motion pictures). "The Mummy" has two female characters: One is corrupt albeit not unattractive ancient Egyptian royal Ahmanet, who, once freed from her tomb in the present day, is the incarnation of all evil and stuff. Oh, sure, filmmakers, by all means use a tragic and unnecessary war that’s still yielding horrific consequences for the world as the backdrop for your stupid horror movie plot machinations, no problem here.Īnd, of course, there’s the movie’s very old-school sexism. I got sand in my synapses during an early scene in which Tom Cruise, as a looter named Nick Morton (oh, “Mort,” I get it now), and his sidekick, played by Jake Johnson, casually slaughter a bunch of “Iraqi insurgents” trying to track down a mysterious treasure. “The Mummy,” directed (if that’s what you want to call it I honestly think the better term here is “ostensibly overseen on behalf of the studio executives”) by Alex Kurtzman from a script by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie, and Dylan Kussman, has plenty to get irritated about. The FTC confirmed it received the letter of complaint from the CCFC and other groups, but could not comment further. He also noted that 95 percent of Prodigy players use the free model. And he said that since the report’s publication, Prodigy has added new features, including giving students a chance to correct their mistakes, video lessons, and hints to help kids better understand questions. In response to that criticism, Bigg pointed to a report by Johns Hopkins University that concluded Prodigy “appears to positively relate to student achievement on standardized tests” among the sample of students in two schools that it examined.īut, as the groups noted, the Johns Hopkins report showed a “lack of remediation and actual teaching” by Prodigy, and in their view, did not “substantiate” the organization’s “efficacy claims.”īigg countered that the report was “overwhelmingly supportive” of Prodigy’s positive impact as a tool for teachers and parents. The groups argue in their complaint that Prodigy’s claim that its product “builds essential math skills” and “improves grades and test scores,” aren’t backed by evidence. He also noted that Prodigy doesn’t show any outside ads, or sell or lease user information to others. But he added, “we have intentionally ensured that all educational elements remain available for free.”Īnd he said that without the subscription service, the company would have to put the whole program behind a paywall, which conflicts with its mission. The company takes concerns about its practices seriously and would be “pleased” to talk to the CCFC directly, he said.Īnd about those extras that premium subscribers get? “It is natural for subscription-based services to offer features that are not available to users of the free service,” Bigg said. … We do not pressure users into upgrading.” The game does let users know about premium memberships from “time to time,” he said in an email interview, so that students and parents are aware that they exist.īut, he added, “we look to do this responsibly and sparingly so it does not detract from the free game play experience or educational quality. James Bigg, a spokesman for Prodigy, countered those claims. Kids with Premium memberships are also allowed to advance through the game faster, which makes it appear that they are progressing faster in math. That creates “two classes of students, those whose families can afford a premium membership, and those that cannot.” “Children can see who has the cool stuff and who doesn’t,” the groups write. That’s, in part, because kids who are members are given access to “coveted virtual items,” including costumes and wizard spells, even when they play the game at school. “Prodigy unfairly manipulates children into asking their parents for a Premium membership,” argued the groups, which also include the Badass Teachers Association and the Network for Public Education. These ads promote the “Premium annual membership” version of the game, which can cost a little over $100 annually, if parents elect to pay month-to-month rather than buying a six-month or annual subscription. But in the home-based version, students see up to four times as many advertisements than math questions, according to the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood. The school-based version doesn’t include advertisements, although it encourages kids to continue playing at home. Many schools integrate Prodigy into instruction. It is designed for use by students in grades 1-8, and anyone with an internet connection can sign up to receive free access to the game, according to Prodigy’s website. Prodigy has more than 100 million registered users around the world, according to a recent press release. Lesson 1: How to set ONE goal and constantly focus on it Note: Here’s the rest of this productivity series, in case you need to catch up on any of these. Now all you have to do is eat that damn frog in the morning. You have a clear goal, you have tiny action items lined up, you go to bed early and you have a brilliant morning routine. Let’s assume you’ve done everything right so far. Note: Think you might be a special snowflake? Unless you pass this supertasker-test by the University of Newcastle (which is ridiculously hard), you’re not, so you’d best get on single-tasking.īut how? The Environment of Inevitability Want these kinds of results? Stop procrastinating, eliminate multitasking. For the past 2.5 years, James has stuck to this schedule without fail, resulting in 200+ published articles on his site, nearly 200,000 email subscribers and over 2.4 million unique visitors in 2014 alone. On Mondays and Thursdays that’s writing an article, which he publishes the same day on. No matter what else he does that day, his anchor task MUST get done. He publicly admits to having only one anchor task each day. If you’ve ever read anything about self-improvement online, you probably ran into James Clear. Of course I’m only a small fish in the single-tasking universe. These 6 hours of focus got me on Productivityist, a very popular productivity blog. Last Sunday I not only spent 0 minutes driving or almost crashing into things, but also focused for 6 hours on drafting, writing, editing, finishing and pitching an entire guest post – 2746 words. What kind of results can you expect from implementing this?įast forward 4 years from my near-accident. Jump to the front of the line by clicking here. If you wanna cut to the chase, just grab the checklist of all 32 environment changes you can make, along with some other bonuses (like a few cool ways to show you you can’t multitask and a report on the science behind it). It has car crashes, science, screenshots with arrows, video, music and tons of instructions. I wish I could take credit for this strategy, but unfortunately James Clear beat me to it. To do so we’ll make lots of small tweaks to your environment, which will add up to a big boost in concentration. That’s why today, you’ll learn how to stop procrastinating. Instead, if we focus on eliminating procrastination itself, multitasking will dissipate right with it. Countless books and productivity experts argue for us to quit multitasking and that’s a noble idea, but it misses the root cause: our desire to do what’s easier. It’s hard for us to concentrate our attention on one thing, so we add in more to still feel busy, yet face less cognitive dissonance. Multitasking is, at its core, a way for us to procrastinate. Before you accidentally kill yourself like I almost did, I’ll help you address this issue. I learned the hard way that multitasking doesn’t work. Because magically, just like in the training, I corrected it and caught the car before it spun or hit oncoming traffic.įorget cold showers. I can’t remember who gave me that drivers’ orientation and safety training for my 17th birthday, but whoever you are, I owe you one. Away from the ditch…and right into the opposite lane. Instinctively, my left hand yanks the steering wheel all the way to the left, the car starts to skid. The car started vibrating as the tire hit the grass. The right front tire went over the white line. from the Salon de Cros in Provence, re-published. In Lyon, at Antoine Volan, 1555 “.Īs you know, Nostradamus was a doctor, but was almost expelled from the university for his passion for pharmaceuticals – thanks to his ability to combine herbs, medicines and … sugar, he was nicknamed the alchemist. The second demonstrates the methods and manner of making several types of jam, from honey, sugar and wine, consisting of chapters, as can be seen from the content. Compiled for the first time by M. The first tells about the different ways of making blush and fragrances for whitening and beautifying the face. It brought together drug speculations, beauty tips, and sweet recipes – all sugar-based. The full title of the book is: “A wonderful and very useful opus for those who want to get acquainted with exquisite recipes, divided into two parts. In his most important book, Les Propheties, 1555, Nostradamus predicted many world events that did take place: for example, the French Revolution, both world wars, and even the election of Donald Trump as president. But a few years earlier, he wrote another work – “Treatise on cosmetics and jams” (Traité des fardements et confitures), which was also published in 1555. On December 14, the French alchemist and fortuneteller Michel de Notrdam, known as Nostradamus, was born. But few people know that his first book was … a culinary one. We will tell you why Nostradamus loved jam so much. As for characters I personally like there is Flippy. Or Nutty, a squirrel obsessed with candy or anything sugary. Sniffles, a nerdy anteater who is often seen inventing or trying to eat a family of ants (who are some of the worst characters in the show). There's Lumpy, a moose who is often the one indirectly responsible for the deaths of the other characters his main schtick being that he has several jobs despite his idiocy. There's Petunia, a skunk who has severe disdain for anything dirty and must clean it due to her OCD. The characters for the most part are simplistic in personality. This bait and switch tactic is one of the things I love about the show aside from its creativity when devising endless numbers of ways for the forest animals to die. Another character winds up falling victim to the blender. She dies later on when she accidentally ingests some nuts and bloats up exploding when a blind mole mistakes her for the donkey. At first it's pretty obvious that she would get horribly maimed if she were to try to reach in and unclog it, but at the last minute, she stops herself and goes to turn off the blender. For instance, there's one episode where Flaky - a nervous-prone porcupine - is blending nuts only for the gear to get clogged. They would set up a scenario where it appears to be a shoo-in for a character to meet their bloody end only to then subvert that expectation.only to have them die a different way. Knowing the gist behind how each episode plays out, it would seem that the show would lose some interest due to its predictability, but Happy Tree Friends usually subverts this by playing with expectations to keep the show fresh. Happy Tree Friends fulfills that curiosity for me. Coyote was crushed by an anvil from ACME but with a more realistic spin to it, or if Tom got into accidents that he couldn't easily recover from. I always imagined what it would be like if for instance Wile E. To me, the violence reminds me of some of the older cartoons such as Wile E. I can't remember the first video from Mondo Media I watched about Happy Tree Friends, but I can definitely recall being utterly shocked because I was reeled in thinking that it was a kids' show. Which is one of the reasons as to why I love the show. Each episode starts off fine with cute little forest animals going about their daily lives but then without that much time in, the show transforms into a violent display of death and mayhem with characters getting into horrible accidents or dying in some of the most brutal ways. However, this is merely a façade underneath which belies a truly screwed up premise. What more do I have to say here? On the surface, Happy Tree Friends appears to be family friendly with its cutesy art style and character designs. |
